ARTS HOUSE PARTICIPATE IN ARTCOP21 — THE CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC RESPONSE TO THE UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE CHANGE
On the final day of the Paris COP (Conference of Parties) talks, where politicians decide our planets’ future, TippingPoint Australia will facilitate a virtual forum – COP OUT with an eclectic and esteemed group of scientists, artists, academics and activists to discuss how art can impact climate change.
Facilitated by TippingPoint Australia and hosted by musician and activist Matt Wicking from the Centre for Sustainability, COP OUT will include interviews, reflections and conversations with over 30 contributors, including Councillor Cathy Oke live from Paris at COP21 and Councillor Rohan Leppert in Melbourne at Arts House, who will discuss the successes and challenges of COP21 and the role art and culture is playing in the events surrounding the conference.
Other COP OUT contributors include playwright, Stephen Sewell; atmospheric scientist (playing a carbon cop), Professor David Karoly; performer, Nicola Gunn; and Professor of Sustainable Development and former head of the Monash Sustainability Institute, Dave Griggs.
“This unique COP OUT event gives people across Melbourne and beyond the opportunity to join the conversation online on the crucial Paris climate talks,” said Cr Leppert, chair of City of Melbourne’s Arts and Culture committee.
“I would encourage Melburnians to be part of the global response to the most pressing challenge facing our planet,” said Cr Leppert.
COP OUT is the first time an Arts House Supper Club event is inviting local and international audiences to participate in the conversation online (via the ArtCop21 website and Arts House blog) which will also include a live broadcast of short films, audio works and documentation by artists in response to the global challenge on climate change.
During COP OUT participants can engage online and ask questions via Twitter (@artshousemelb using #copout21) that will be answered and debated by the panel in real time.
ArtCOP21 will connect hundreds of thousands of people to the climate challenge through an extensive global program of over 290 major events; art installations, plays, exhibitions, concerts, performances, talks, conferences, workshops, family events and screenings – plus a whole range of people power gatherings and demonstrations – taking place right across the world.
Sitting somewhere between pessimism and optimism and triggered by a desire to drive change regardless, COP OUT is where you’ll need to be as we plan our futures.
